How to control your home theater with Amazon Alexa

You’re in control at all times, and you can disconnect at any time by closing your browser window. While you could also just use the Alexa Voice Remote of your Fire TV, we recommend using a standalone Echo because the Fire TV doesn't play nice with Spotify. There is an app you can download and you can tell Alexa to "Launch Spotify," but you can't tell it to "Play Michael Jackson on Spotify" on the Fire TV, you have to control it with the remote by hand. Wirecutter is the product recommendation service from The New York Times.

This will be used to power the Echo Dot and simultaneously return its audio to the amplifier. We recommend adding a power tree with surge protection with an outlet for the amplifier plus one outlet for each Echo Dot that will be installed throughout the home. Stay tuned for next week when we dig into our third installment and see how several new smart home elements come together. If you haven’t yet gotten caught up with the scope and scale of this smart home transformation, be sure to check out video 1 of this series. Amazon Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen)

A smart display combines a voice-controlled speaker with a touchscreen and sits on a counter, desk, or side table. Like a regular smart speaker, a smart display is always listening for commands or queries issued via its wake word (by default “Alexa” or “Hey, Google”). So this makes it easy to casually get sports updates, watch photo slideshows, receive calendar alerts, and more, depending on how you customize the display. A smart display can also do all the same tasks as a screenless, voice-controlled speaker . These tasks include allowing voice control of smart devices; streaming music, podcasts, and radio stations; alerting you to upcoming weather and events on your calendar; building grocery lists; and playing games.

Hey, I am looking to see how I can use voice commands for my Anthem MRX-720. To control a BluOS device with Alexa, for example, the skill you need is called "Blue Voice." And your commands will need to begin with the preface, "Hey Alexa, ask Blue Voice to..." The simpler you keep your commands, the better your assistant can understand them and make them happen. Here's a list of commands Alexa understands, and here's one for Google Assistant. These speakers have built-in mics, so you don't necessarily need another Alexa device to use them. I will be but via my Harmony Elite remote which controls everything except my BOSS amp at this time.

The best Alexa compatible devices in 2022

The Ring Video Doorbell 4 is a smart device that allows you to monitor who comes to your front door. The doorbell includes a small camera with a motion detector and infrared night vision, so that any time someone is on your doorstep, you can see them through any phone, tablet or PC connected to your doorbell. One of the easiest ways to marry voice control and higher-fidelity audio is by using a wired connection from your Alexa assistant to your stereo or home theater receiver or preamp, or integrated amp. All Echo assistants have a 3.5mm stereo output that can connect to an aux input, or an RCA stereo input.

Making the initial connection and configuring your setup are both critical steps. Unless you're using a 3.5mm wired connection from an Alexa assistant, you need to check for compatibility. Second, when voice assistants don't work the way they're supposed to, it's often because we need to go into the app — sometimes multiple apps — and fix some settings. I've got hands-on experience with a wide variety of amplifiers, processors, microphones, speakers, cables, adapters, power supplies, headphones, and basically any and all types of gear that makes music sound great. But, since you have a projector and likely do not wish to replace it you could consider the addition of a Broadlink IR Remote.

However, we had no difficulty placing calls between Google-made and Lenovo-made smart displays. We think the Nest Hub Max’s speakers are good enough to please a cook in the kitchen but not to stream rare B-sides from, say, The Cure. But the Nest Hub Max’s larger screen is more valuable, since the screen is the most important feature of a smart display (if the screen isn’t the highest priority for you, then you might be better off with a smart speaker). Like the Echo Show, the Nest Hub Max could hear us speaking in a normal voice from about 15 feet away. We had to raise our voice if we were in the next room, had a fan nearby, or had music blaring.

There are several wireless speakers and a few receivers that are compatible with Google Assistant, but don't have built-in mics. The component will show up in the app so you can add it for voice control and, voila. Give it a name that's easy to say and remember, then start telling it what to play.

Ecobee3 Lite Smart Thermostat

We’ve carefully chosen the components of this kit to ensure a crystal-clear listening experience. It’s available for a nominal rental fee, and includes a $25 Crutchfield merchandise credit. I'd just like to comment that the HEOS software/app is very amateur and unstable.

A standalone Echo can control your home theater, but you may want to consider just getting an Echo Dot. It's far cheaper and features Bluetooth and a 3.5mm audio-out port . So instead of relying on its own tiny speaker, it can use any high-end speaker setup you may already have as part of your home theater. This allows you to build a variety of immersive, wireless speaker configurations for your living room set-up, including 1.0 and 2.0 configurations and, for owners of Echo Sub, 1.1 and 2.1 configurations as well. For customers with Echo and Echo Plus, this means you can stream Dolby audio wireless, while those with Echo Studio can stream Dolby Atmos-quality sound.

During the day, you can customize the Show 5 with a few different clock displays. For those who have relied on a smartphone to check the time during middle-of-the-night wake-ups, we’ve found that the switch back to a clock display can be calming and helpful. If that’s something you’re looking for in the Alexa ecosystem, we recommend checking out the Echo Show 10.

Best of all, this version has the ability to pan and tilt for 360-degree coverage. As an added bonus, Blink cameras can be linked together to provide you with a broader picture of your house. You might already be familiar with the that turns a non-smart TV into one that can stream from a variety of services. The Fire TV Cube improves upon those abilities by adding Alexa directly into your TV, meaning you can switch between services and channels using the sound of your voice.

This fifth generation model is special in the way that it doubles as an Eero Wi-Fi mesh router, giving you a simple and easy way to expand your home’s Wi-Fi network if there are any dead spots. Furthermore, it gains some useful tap gestures to dismiss alarms, notifications, and more. Virtual audio technology allows you to compare sonic characteristics between speakers so you can make a more informed shopping decision.

A smart display also answers simple questions, like how to convert from cups to tablespoons or the number of ounces in a jigger. The Google Assistant–enabled Google Nest Hub Max is a handy digital assistant for streaming audio and video or making video calls. And thanks to its integration with Google, the Nest Hub Max seamlessly reminds you of upcoming Google Calendar appointments and transforms into an attractive, 10-inch digital photo frame of images .
